Demonization
Demonization is a technique used primarily in war propaganda to justify war by portraying the opposing force as being immoral, thus spreading the notion that they are not at war, but rather, a fight against a menacing aggressor. This advertisement, created by the government of the United States during World War II, portrays the Nazi Germans (as can be inferred by the swastika symbol) cutting through the Bible. Literally, this shows how physically brutal the Nazis are, but metaphorically, this emphasizes on the fact that the Nazis act immorally, against the Bible. By portraying its enemy (Nazi Germans) as such cruel, barbaric people, the government of the US justifies their stance on World War II by dubbing it a ‘war of defense’.
